There is much more to lawn mowing beyond just making your lawn look neat and tidy.
Here are some lawn mower techniques that the pros play with to create truly impressive lawns.
Speed
Whether using a push or riding lawn mower, mow at a medium pace when going over open areas of lawn. But use a slow speed on bends and corners so that you keep the mower under control.
If your lawn is particularly overgrown or the conditions are wet, it may also be best to mow at a slow pace to make sure you give the lawn a proper cut.
Hills and inclines
To mow hilly lawns using a riding mower, it’s best to go up and then down the slope of the incline.
If using a push mower then mow while traveling across the hill, adjacent to the incline.
Uneven Growth
If your lawn surface is rough and the surface is uneven, travel in different directions each time you mow the lawn. So up and down the lawn one session, and then from side to side the next session.
That will smooth out the lawn surface and help the grass grow evenly.
“Grasscycling”
This refers to the recycling of grass clippings by mulching them up and leaving them to decompose on the surface of the lawn.
Grasscycling allows nitrogen and nutrients to seep back into the surface of the soil, nourishing the grass.
It is best to do this when the lawn you’re mowing isn’t very long in the first place, meaning the lawn clippings (which should be about a third of the total length of each grass blade) will be small enough to decompose quickly.
Simply mow your lawn, leaving the clippings where they are. Then simply mow over your lawn again which will shred the clippings. A fast, natural, and free way to provide nutrients for your lawn!
Trimming Edges
Tidy the edges of your lawn with a string trimmer before bringing in the lawn mower.
That allows easier and more enjoyable mowing as you can concentrate on the open areas of the lawn, rather than getting distracted by untidy edges.
Lawn edges are difficult to clear up using a lawn mower.
Also, leave the trimmed clippings on the surface of the lawn, which the mower can then grasscycle.
If you do not wish to grasscycle the grass clippings, use a lawn sweeper to quickly clear them out.
